The Taming of the Tongue

by Shelley

Dear Lord,

My tongue  is meant to share Your faithfulness, to make much of you, to sing to you, to whisper my desires to you, to build others up, to soothe, and  speak truth in love.

So then, why is this instrument  designed as a thing of beauty being used in a manner that is not worthy of the calling You gave me?

Why can’t I stop the words that roil out of my mouth before they hurt someone? Yet, I can effortlessly hold my tongue when it comes to sharing who You are with others.

Why do I remember ever single lyric from the songs of my unredeemed youth but have so much trouble memorizing Your Word?

I find it , oh so easy to mummer my  petty dissatisfaction to all who will hear. But my tongue was created to whisper my desires to your bended ear.

Why am I more content spouting off my opinions rather than speaking the truth in love?

Lord, my request is that You will train and tune this feeble instrument to Your liking.

Tame my tongue by changing me from the inside out so You are  evident in the syllables that tumble over my lips.

May the words I say be Your words. the thoughts I think be Your thoughts.

Cleanse me, for I am a woman of unclean lips.

OKAY … this one I printed out to place where I will see it everyday … whether we’re HSing or I am in the office doing work or surfing the net!

Thank you. This post is such a great reminder and over this past week I have heard God speaking to my heart about this as it seems this very topic materializes in the most unusual places as of late. Just last evening I was talking with my husband about this as well and how I keep seeing this topic everywhere. I don’t have a problem with the gossip, this I stay away from and ignore. However, my tone or even words are at times poorly chosen and is usually the case of me simply not thinking before I speak. As I work on this, I have realized that for me a first step is to also take captive a thought and examine it before speaking it. MUCH HARDER to do and put into action than to think or write about! I so very much want was written above, ‘May the words I say be Your words. The thoughts I think be Your thoughts.’

In Him~

Thanks Sandi, I like the part where you said to take the thought captive, we must examine it before we speak. So tough but so true. May the Lord keep a watch over the gates of our mouth. and be our filter.
